What is the Sajdah al-Tilaawah?
- It is waajib on a person to perform sajdah (prostration) on reciting or hearing another person recite one of the 14 ayaat al-tilaawah (Verses of Prostration) of the Holy Qur'an.
- It is waajib on both the reciter and all those who hear the recitation.
What is the Method of Performing Sajdah al-Tilaawah outside Salaah?
- The method is for one to stand up, face Qiblah, say "Allahu Akbar" and go straight into sajdah, pray "Subhaana Rabbi'al A’laa’" (at least) three times, and then saying, "Allahu Akbar" stand back up.
- All the Sharaait (preconditions) of salaah other than takbeer al-tahreemah (i.e. cleanliness, facing the Qiblah, intention, covering body etc.) must be satisfied.
It is makrooh tahreemi to perform any sajdah al-tilaawah at the following times:
- At the time of sunrise.
- At the time when the sun is at it's peak (zenith).
- When the sun is so close to setting that one is able to look directly at the sun until sunset.
What is the Method of Performing Sajdah al-Tilaawah in Salaah?
- Immediately on completing the ayah al-tilaawah, say "Allahu Akbar" and go straight into sajdah, pray "Subhaana Rabbi'al A’laa’" (at least) 3 times, and while saying Allahu Akbar, immediately stand back up in qiyaam and carry on with the rest of your salaah.
- It is better to recite some verses as going from qiyaam to sajdah to qiyaam and then immediately into rukoo' resembles mixing up the order in which salaah is prayed. However, doing so would not invalidate the salaah.
What if I forget to Perform the Sajdah al-Tilaawah?
If you prayed a verse of sajdah in salaah, but have forgotten to perform sajdah then as long as you are in the "Hurmah (sanctity) of Salaah" then you must perform it and then perform sujoodal-sahw.
A person continues to be in the "Hurmah of Salaah" until one performs an act that invalidates the salaah (for example, if the wudoo' is broken, by eating or drinking, or talking to someone). In this instance, a person will continue to be in the "Hurmah of Salaah" even if one performed salaam.
